Do
you want a dog that behaves appropriately in a crowd, displays good manners
when guests enter your home and is reliable around children? Then you must
train!
A
well behaved dog is a pleasure to be around, you can take it anywhere
without
being a nuisance to others.
If you ever need to find a new home for your dog, his/her chances of placement
increase significantly if trained. Unruly older dogs can have a hard time
finding someone
who wants to take them.
-
An
obedient, well-mannered dog is appreciated and welcome, he/she receives
more positive attention and interaction from family members, visitors, and
passers-by, than does a disobedient, out-of-control dog.
-
Training
is one of the most important tasks in raising a dog. A well trained dog is
a happy dog! He understands his position in the pack and requires fewer restrictions. The more reliable
your dog is, the more freedom he/she can be given.
-
It
is a very important component of being a responsible dog owner!
-
Training
can strengthen the bond between you and your pet. It builds understanding,
mutual respect, and teaches you how to "speak dog."
-
Training
gives you control over a number of potential life
threatening situations. For example: If the door is left open and you see
your dog letting himself out, you can safely call him back using your
recall command. Or if your dog slips his collar, you can command him to
sit (he can’t run off when he’s sitting) to get the collar back on.
-
Trained
dogs are less likely to be relinquished to animal shelters.
-
Dogs
that need homes are more likely to find one because a trained dog is
easier to place than one that is not.
The
Consequences Of An Untrained Dog
What
typically happens to dogs that haven't been trained? They go outside when
company arrives because of jumping up or aggression. Un-trained dogs often get left behind, unable to go for a walk or to play in
the park because they won't walk on a leash or come when called.
The untrained dog is often scolded or punished for its "inappropriate"
behavior. The relationship can become more of a struggle than a pleasure,
consequently, many untrained dogs end up at local shelters. If you find yourself scolding,
punishing or reprimanding your dog more often than enjoying its company and
praising it, then you both might benefit from some training.
