  • Owning a dog is a commitment– know your time constraints, research breed traits, plan to include your pet in your family activities and life. In the event it "doesn’t work out," it's your responsibility to find a good home for the animal.

  • Prevent pet overpopulation- Spay and neuter your pets. If you choose not to spay or neuter your pet, keep him/her confined to prevent "accidents" and breed only animals who are healthy in body and mind and will pass along these traits to their offspring. It is the breeder's responsibility to find good homes for puppies. Breed responsibly if you choose to do so.

  • Provide Preventative Healthcare – Your pet needs annual shots, exams, dental, hearing/ears, proper diet, and ample exercise to flourish.

  • Obey leash laws (Boise City Code 6-7-17E) – Leashing your dog is in the animal’s best interest and could save their life. Dog Owners must be aware of the very real fear many people have of dogs. Responsible Dog Owners realize that not everyone is as amused with their dogs as they are.

  • Do not allow your dog to roam- see above and below

  • Dispose of dog waste - Respect your neighbors and keep multiple use areas "dog friendly" by cleaning up after your dog. Participate in organized multiple use area clean ups.

  • Train your pet to positively respond to humans and come on command. Make sure your dog is well socialized.

  • Educate children and the general public regarding respect and compassion for all animals and appropriate canine greeting protocol.

  • License your pet with identification tags and a city license (Boise City Code 6-7) "a ticket home for your lost dog". Microchips and tattoos will also help your pet get home

  • Report Animal Cruelty and Neglect

  • Support Animal Advocacy Groups such as City D.O.G., breed rescue groups, local animal shelters and local animal advocacy groups
