Hard
as it is, sometimes we need to find new homes for our friends. It is the
owner's responsibility to ensure that a dog who can't be kept finds a good
home. Check out prospective takers- take time talking with them, visit
the new home if possible. The idea is to find a permanent new home, so
it's important to be honest about why the dog is being given up. The more
dogs are passed around, the less trusting they are and it gets harder for
them to settle in. There are people who scope out the dog ads and sell
dogs to labs or use them in dog fights, so please be careful. Click
here to visit a site with some good advice for rehoming your dog, including
information on how to screen prospective homes.
Most importantly, remember that
dogs are not disposable. If you give your pet up, think long and hard before
bringing another dog into your home.
Here
are some alternatives to taking your pet to the Humane
Society:
-
If
you're experiencing behavior problems, consider consulting a qualified trainer
or animal behaviorist before giving up your pal. With
lots of love and a little work on your family's part, most problems can be
overcome.
-
If
your dog is a purebred please contact the closest Breed
Rescue Organization . They will make sure that the next owner
understands the breed's personality and needs. Most rescue workers are
dedicated to making sure that your dog finds a home that fits. (Note:
Some rescue organizations do not take owner placements, but it is
a good idea to contact the group anyway & let them know your
situation and where your dog is going.)
-
Northwest
Animal Companions (NAC) is a non-profit organization
that works to save abandoned animals through adoption, education and
community outreach programs. They will help you find a home for a pet that you can no
longer keep. NAC's goal is the establishment of a no-kill sanctuary
in southwestern Idaho where animals will be well cared for until they can
be adopted. For those not adopted, it will be a
place to live out their natural lives in peace and well-being in the
company of many others of their kind.
-
Many
of us who love dogs also have and love cats.
Just Strays is
dedicated to fostering and finding homes for cats who need them.
Many
unwanted animals were put down in the Treasure Valley last year. Please
help reduce the number of pets looking for homes by spaying and neutering,
educating yourself before choosing a pet and helping us educate your friends.
